The device to support children with heart failure is tested In Moscow
Moscow specialists are testing a unique device for maintaining blood circulation in children with heart failure, developed by the academician Shumakov Center.
The implant is intended for small patients who are diagnosed with severe forms of insufficiency. These patients are currently not a candidates for heart transplantation for various reasons, and it is necessary to wait for a favorable moment for the operation.
The device, which took six years to create, is an artificial pump for pumping blood at a speed of 7500 rpm. The device operation is monitored on a special display. The developers note that now it is important to ensure the reliability and smooth functioning of the device in any conditions, whatever the patient is doing – eating, sleeping, walking, playing or standing on his head.
The uniqueness of the device is not only that it will enable children to live up to heart transplantation procedure, but also that it has itself a positive effect on myocardial muscle, restoring it and improving its performance.
The developers gave a detailed information about the innovative device functioning – the blood is pumped into the aorta from the left ventricle top part, thereby unloading it. In this case, the pump acts in such a way that when the blood is pumped, it does not "twist", so there are no clots or thrombus.
The total device weight is about 80 grams. There is a turbine operating at high speed inside. All the device parts are treated with a special nanoparticles composition in order to prevent platelet sticking to the device walls.
The unique implant creators note that special attention in the development and testing of the device was paid to the high reliability of the mechanical action of the bearing and the motor axis, the main structural elements that allow the device to operate smoothly and reliably for many months or even several years.
The innovative device now is tested on animals in the scientific center of Transplantology. According to the developers, this stage of testing was successful. An animal testing will be completed in a week. This will be followed by the most difficult phase of clinical trials – clinical testing.
